Plants For Medicinal Purposes

Plants have different parts that serve different purposes. They also contain numerous chemical compounds which are composed of active ingredients used in producing specific medicinal effects. Knowledge about these things would be best supplemented by knowing which plat part contains most of the chemical ingredient, the amount to be used, the manner of harvesting and handling, and how different factors, such as temperature, humidity, or light, would affect such collection.

There are different methods of collecting different plant parts. For example, if the seed is to be used, the fruit is allowed to ripen full before harvest. If the active chemical ingredient is found in the whole fruit, then it may be collected even before it matures. In the case of most underground plants, their parts are collected just before the surface parts would reach the flowering stage. These underground parts are collected in a warm dry weather to attain the best medicinal effects.

Most medicinal plants are dried, whether they are to be stored or extracted. Moisture content is a factor to take into consideration, since moisture may encourage the growth of molds and other destructive micro organisms which will lead to further plant deterioration. Air drying or sun drying is two methods usually employed in the absence of temperature-controlled ovens. The dried plan drugs are stored in air tight containers, like plastic or glass jars, and placed in a cool, dry place away from light.

Medicinal plants can be administered in a lot of ways. One of which is through decoration. This is a preparation made by boiling herbal materials in water for a period of time. Seeds, roots, and bark are usually boiled for thirty minutes at about five percent strength. The solution must then be strained and cooled prior to administration. You can also run it via infusion. The preparation is made by soaking the medicinal herb or plant part in boiling water for at least fifteen minutes.
